Ajit Appari

Research Fellow

I am a research fellow in the Center for Digital Strategies at Tuck, and postdoc affiliate with the Institute for Security, Technology and Society at Dartmouth College. My main research interests are at the intersection of information systems, health services research, and organizational behavior. My ongoing research program aims to enhance our understanding of: (1) the organizational impact of IT use on quality, safety, and efficiency of health care delivery; and (2) associated managerial and policy issues of information security risks and privacy of protected health information. His research spans contextual settings such as hospitals, home health agencies, and ambulatory care; and covers a broad spectrum of organizational performance measures including process quality, outcome quality, and cost efficiency.

My research has been published in high impact journals including Journal of American Medical Informatics Association (JAMIA), and Health Services Research (HSR). My research published in JAMIA has received Editor's Choice honor. I've presented my research at several leading international conferences, including AcademyHealth, Academy of Management, Americas Conference on Information Systems, Workshop on Health IT and Economics, and Workshop on Economics of Information Security. More recently, my paper on meaningful EHR use and hospital quality, forthcoming in HSR, has been covered by several news media including InformationWeek, U.S. News & World Report, American Medical News, and Becker's Hospital Review.

I received my undergraduate and graduate degrees in India [from National Institute of Technology, in 1993; and Indian Statistical Institute, in 1996 respectively), and PhD (in 2008) from Syracuse University. Prior to 2002, I have worked in manufacturing and software industry. My corporate experience include quality management, software development, and compliance with international standards such as ISO 9001, and Software Engineering Institute's Capability Maturity Model. Besides research, my interests include photography, travel, and tennis.
